When is the Divine Liturgy?
The Divine Liturgy is every Sunday at 8:45 a.m. It lasts 50 to 55 minutes. The service is in English, with a few hymns in English, Greek, and Arabic. (Roman Catholics: Our liturgy fulfills your Sunday obligation.)
Where is the church?
The church is at 538 Concord Street, El Segundo, CA 90245, on the southeast corner of Mariposa Avenue and Concord Street. From the 405 and the 105, take the 105 West until it becomes Imperial Highway, continue about one mile to Main Street, turn left, go about one mile to Mariposa (look for the El Segundo Public Library), turn right, and go two blocks to Concord.
How do I find the entrance?
The main entrance faces Concord Street. If you cannot use stairs, there is a ramp to the immediate right of the main stairs that leads to another entrance on the south side of the building. Both enter directly into the main sanctuary.
Where do I park?
There is plenty of street parking along both sides of Mariposa Street, and additional parking on Concord and next to the El Segundo Public Library (one block east).
What should I wear?
Wear what you would ordinarily wear to any church. There is no prescribed dress code for men or women.
When do I stand and when do I sit?
Indications to stand or sit are provided in the liturgy booklet, but it’s easiest just to look around you and follow the lead of regular parishioners!
Do I need to know Greek or Arabic?
No. A few hymns are in English, Greek, and Arabic, but nearly all of the service is in English, including the readings and the homily. There is a booklet that contains all the main prayers and responses for you to follow.
How long does it last?
About 50 to 55 minutes. Coffee hour follows for those who have time to stay and chat.
Can I bring children?
Yes! Children of all ages are welcome at the liturgy. We do not have a separate children’s program. If your child needs a break, you can step outside and come back in at any time. There is a restroom through the courtyard in the rear of the church. Ask a parishioner if you need help finding it.
May I receive Communion?
Catholics in good standing may receive Communion. As you approach to receive, take a small red napkin, unfold it, and hold it under your chin. Communion is given on a spoon with bread and wine together. Simply tilt your head back slightly and open your mouth. You do not say "Amen" or respond to the priest. You are also welcome just to come forward for a blessing, or to remain at your seat.
Is incense used?
Incense is used a few times during the Divine Liturgy. If smoke or fragrance affects your health, ask a parishioner to help you find a seat near a door.
Where are the kneelers? Why doesn’t anyone genuflect?
Eastern Christians usually bow as a sign of reverence rather than genuflect, but you may do whatever you are comfortable with. Kneeling is only done at certain Eastern services throughout the year, so there are no kneelers. Our church has individual chairs. We alternate between sitting and standing during the liturgy.
What happens after the liturgy?
Everyone is invited to coffee and refreshments on the back patio. We are always very friendly and welcoming to visitors, and ready to answer any questions you might have about the liturgy or our parish.
